(or The Curse, part 20)

As she listened to the ringing on the other end of the phone, Julie slowly lowered herself to the floor. It was taking a lot of her strength not to just fall asleep. Her newly-grown soft, dark, waves of hair cushioned her as she laid back. Soon, someone answered.

"Julie? Hi, how are you do--"

"Megan!" the name came as instant relief as she said it. "I'm in trouble. I need you!"

She could hear the tension in her new friend's voice. "What? What is it?!"

"I know who cut Mary's hair, Megan. He...he found me, too. I--"

"Julie, no! Are you all right?"

Julie couldn't help but cry a little as she blurted out the story to Megan. She identified Todd as her attacker, although she did manage to leave out the fact that he had also attacked her several hours ago at school and that she had failed to alert Ms. Featherstone immediately. She was too ashamed.

Julie continued. "I think he's taking my hair to that construction site right now. Tell Ms. Featherstone! She has to stop him!"

"I will," Megan answered. "But after...where are you? I need to come be with you. I can't leave you alone right now."

Julie silently thanked God for this new friend in her life. The fact that someone cared about her at all was still weird to take in. She told Megan the address, and hung up.

Tired as she was, talking with Megan had given her new strength. She realized anew that Mikey and Matt were still playing in her mounds of lush tresses, burrowing like bunnies through the vast length.

"Boys!" she stood and demanded their attention. They sheepishly halted their activity; it wasn't lost on Matt that she might be incredibly angry with him for cutting her hair, even though she now had twice as much.

"The scissors," Julie pressed. "I know where you got them. And I don't blame you for using them. My hair has a weird effect on people lately. But give them to me right now."

Matt knew she was not kidding around. He looked around, then pointed to the entrance of the living room where he had dropped them. Julie scooped them up, holding them firmly by the closed blades. She knelt down and faced the little duo.

"Did a big blond boy give you these and tell you to cut my hair?" she asked.

Matt nodded. "He said it was magic. That he would give it to our mommy and she would have long hair and be all better again. I'm sorry..." he held back tears.

Julie's heart softened. She put a hand on each of their shoulders. "Well, he lied to you about one thing. Yes, this is magic. But he is using it to help something evil. He doesn't care about your mom." The boys vaguely recalled the voice in their minds that accompanied Todd's presence. They believed Julie that it wasn't good.

"A-are you going to tell on us? Or--"

"No, what happened wasn't your fault. But I have a mess to fix and I need you both to grab a granola bar from the kitchen and eat them in your room. Dinner is going to have to wait."

The boys did as they were told, relieved that they were out of trouble. Exhausted, Julie laid down again, rolled her hair around her like a tight blanket, and waited for Megan.
