"Y-you...you did it...you destroyed him!"

Joanna whirled around to see Julie standing behind her. The girl's knees wobbled, and she seemed a bit pale, but she was alive. Her lush, chocolatey-brown hair, while a bit disheveled, still shone, and the length of it came to rest just below her knees.

Ms. Featherstone walked over to Julie and embraced her. "Yes, child. It's over now." She smoothed Julie's hair away from her face and smiled. "And it seems a happy ending at that. The curse will no longer trouble you."

Julie, startled, looked down, seeing the length of her hair as if for the first time. Her hands immediately shot to either side of her head, gathering it all in two fists. "It's all real...and it's mine!" Tears came to her eyes, and she became a bit unsteady on her feet. Joanna gently reached out to prop her up, enjoying this moment. The girl's joy was a bit contagious.

Unfortunately, as Julie got her bearings, her smile vanished. She stepped back and gawked. In almost every direction, it seemed, mounds of ebony hair lay strewn about. She couldn't fathom the length of it, this was impossible. Her eyes ran along the strands and to where they all converged atop Ms. Featherstone's head.

"No....no, no, no, no!" Her eyes became wide and she stumbled again, almost falling. She seemed not to notice. "I remember now...I heard you...how you sacrificed your magic...to save me." Tears came freely as guilt wracked her. "I know the curse was destroyed, but you didn't know that would happen. You took it on you of your own free will. How can I live with that?"

Joanna didn't think her heart could soften any more towards Julie than it already had. She put a hand under Julie's chin, and her other hand nudged a lock of the girl's hair to her cheek, absorbing the tears. She raised Julie's eyes to her own. "You would have done the same for me, I believe that. And I know that you'll do everything you can to help me and your new friends." Julie's resolve shone in her eyes. "There's no magic in your hair right now, but we'll take care of that right away. You're one of us now."

Julie threw her arms around the woman. "Yes! Thank you! I'll do anything I can to honor your sacrifice." She stepped back again, motioning around. "But what are we going to do about all this?"

Joanna finally considered her own situation. Her now mile-long hair covered every surface in the surrounding area, piles upon piles of it everywhere. She smirked and held up her compact clip. "I'm going to need a few more of these, at the very least. Of course, it's all full of dark magic, practically useless to me. It might be best to just cut--"

Julie winced at the word. Joanna backpedaled. "Er, let's table this discussion for later. You wouldn't happen to have that ribbon I gave you earlier, would you?"

Julie pulled out her phone. "I think I know where it is." She dialed Megan's number. She had quite the story to tell her new friend...

Wait, I'm confused now. Shouldn't one of them be bald now?
