(Or The Curse, part 16)

The next half hour was full of fun. The boys were jubilant as they used Julie's braids as reins while she gave them a horsey ride; Julie dangled her plaits from the stairwell and let them play Rapunzel's tower, climbing her hair like ropes. It was when they each grabbed one and were about to have a tug-of-war when Julie began to tire.

Looking at the clock, she decided they'd had enough for a little bit. "Hey boys, why don't you go run around in the backyard for a bit while I get dinner ready?" she suggested. Matt and Mikey seemed dismayed for a moment, but quickly forgot their disappointment after a few minutes of kicking a soccer ball around. Julie smiled as she watched, then turned around to the kitchen to see what the boys' parents had left her to prepare.

She paused for a moment, and brought each braid in front of her. She expected them to be pretty bedraggled from the treatment they had received from the rambunctious duo; yet, they were still lustrous and tightly woven. She stroked them for a moment, still in awe at the beauty and softness that this supposed curse had given her once-lackluster locks. Again, she questioned whether this was really the blessing she had always longed for, instead of the curse that had instilled such fear in Ms. Featherstone's eyes. The length of her hair should surely be weighing down on her neck. However, she felt an airiness and weightlessness about it. This was truly wonderful magic!

The day had taken a toll on her emotionally, though, and that was a different kind of weight. She decided she had to leave her reverie, and also maybe put her hair up, to keep it out of the way as she cooked, and so it would be less of a distraction for the kids when they came back inside. She didn't relish the idea of them getting the idea for a tug-of-war again.

Julie had very little experience with updos; again, she wished Megan were here to help her. Not only that, she'd never attempted to make an updo out of two fire hoses, which was what she felt like she was doing now. She wrapped as much as she could of her two braids into a sort of ball, and used the remaining length of her hair to almost tie knots around it, so it would stay in place. Experience had taught her that she wasn't in any danger of tangles, or knots bad enough that couldn't come undone. She would worry about making something pretty later, right now she just needed it up off the floor. She giggled as she caught her reflection in the window. If anyone saw her, their jaw would drop at her ridiculous ball of braids.

Going to the kitchen, she saw a note left for her. Ingredients were available for her to make the boys some waffles, one of their favorite dishes. She began scrambling for everything she would need, still amazed at the lightness of the huge mass of soft ropes atop her head.

--------------------------------------------------

"GOOOOOOOAAAALLL!" Mikey yelled as he ran towards the bushes to retrieve his soccer ball. Matt laughed as he followed, but quickly stood in place when he noticed that someone was standing in the hedge, in their yard. He almost yelled for Julie, but something in his mind stopped him. Almost like a voice, telling him he needed to stop and listen. Even Mikey was transfixed.

The man in the bushes...well, he wasn't actually a man, just one of those really big kids that went to high school. Normally they could be rude bullies, but the feeling in Matt's mind told him he was not in any danger...

He spoke. "Boys. Your mother. She's sick, isnt' she?"

Mikey answered. "Yeah. It makes me sad."

Matt agreed. The big kid continued. "The sickness has really hurt your family, hasn't it?" Matt winced. His mommy had to be in bed a lot of the time. She was too sick to play with them. Dad and Matt's grandparents had had to fill in for her a lot. And she looked different. All of her long hair had fallen out.

The big kid seemed to be able to know what they were thinking. He reached into his knapsack and pulled out a large pair of scissors. "Well, I know how you can help her...she just needs some magic hair. Then she'll be all better."

Matt was confused. Was his mom sick because her hair was gone, or was her hair gone because she was sick? It didn't really make sense, but the voice in his mind pushed at him. It was true. If his mom had long hair again, she would be all better. And Julie's hair MUST be magic to be so long. It all seemed clear to both he and Mikey now.

"Wait," Matt hesitated. "Will anything bad happen to Julie if we take her magic hair?"

"No," the big kid shot. "In fact, it will grow back even longer if you cut it. Then Julie will have even more than she started with. You'll see, and then you'll know I'm right. But she's keeping it all to herself. She's being selfish. You need to teach her how to share."

Matt took the scissors. A look of determination crossed his and Mikey's faces. They would make their mom better again...
